The Department of Treasury should live webcast all meetings

The Department of Treasury should live webcast all meetings for proposed rule making and regulations where the public comment should take place. They should make these meetings available for on demand viewing and have the ability to have that content be indexed for video search. By doing this the public and stakeholders will be able to see the inner workings of the rule making process and make the content and proceedings ...more »

Bring back TeleTax or a simplified form

TeleTax was a well rated, effective way of filing a tax return for millions of people until it was unnecessarily closed. For the majority of people, something like TeleTax or a simplified form that can be filled out on the IRS website (not some random third-party website) should take the place of the 1040EZ. It should allow the IRS to make all the calculations and send the refund/bill. Simplified processes that take less ...more »

Implement Auto Filing

Why do millions of Americans have to waste time filling out their own IRS forms, when their taxes are simple and the IRS already knows what they owe? Amend the Internal Revenue Code to require the Secretary of the Treasury to establish a program for mailing pre-filled income tax returns to assist certain taxpayers who may be eligible for the earned income tax credit in completing their tax returns. This was proposed ...more »

Treasury Consumers Bill of Rights

TREASURY CONSUMER'S BILL OF RIGHTS Note: a hyperlinked version of this text is available at http://bit.ly/TCBoR We, the taxpayers of the United States of America, have the right to be free from government waste and abuse. Inherent in that right is: 1. The right to prevent our taxes from being used to pay banks to refrain from lending commercial paper and to small businesses. Internal Revenue Service

Modernize the IRS to allow individuals who have grievances about how an IRS case is handled to make the process less paper-intensive and more due-process oriented. The overwhelming perception that the current system is a virtually "closed process" where extagent circumstances cannot be discussed prior to full compliance, a formal hearing delays handling enormously and case resolutions are inflexible.

Transparency in spending

Implement a searchable database of every expenditure of federal money. Allow full search of every check written by the Treasury, searchable by date, department, district, and authorizing law. Obviously some expenditures would need to be aggregated for security or privacy reasons, but this very concept has already been implemented by banks and credit card companies for personal accounts. The same level of visibility ...more »

Business, travel and entainment expenses ( should be taxed )

2/24/2010 I strongly suggest that all business travel and entertainment expenses should be taxed. This is for all businesses in the United States of America. If your company sends you to China, or any other place in the world. Companies making the following: sales Between $500,000.00 and $1 million,,,, 25% in taxes Between $1 million and $10 million,,,, 50% in taxes Between $10 million and $100 million,, 100% in taxes ...more »

Campaign: Tell Us How to Improve this Site...

Spread the word!

You need to market this by advertising on all of your bureau web sites internally for the employees and externally for the public. Perhaps management should bring it up at meetings too. As a small time employee, I was not aware of this brilliant concept until today.

Develop an OpenTreasury Social Strategy

Disruptive Technologies: A Holistic, Pragmatic Approach New technologies are emerging at a faster pace than Agencies can swallow. The rate of obsolescence outpaces the pace of change. Despite the new technology flood, Agencies lack a strategy to on-board these disruptions. As a result, they often react, flounder, or simply ignore them. We can solve these problems in four major areas of practice: Leadership ...more »

Bonds to specifically fund revenue generating infrastructure

Here is a link to paper written by Richard G. Little (University of Southern California - School of Policy Planning and Development) on the idea of using infrastructure projects that generate revenue to encourage investment in rebuilding the country's infrastructure. Because the funds are invested only in projects that generate revenue, the money spent is recovered plus interest. The focus of the paper is on rebuilding ...more »

Adopt FDIC, SEC, Global Open Structured XBRL Data Standard

Treasury can make better information available faster and at lower cost by leveraging the global movement to the use of eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL). This open global information standard is subject to robust validation and low-cost, continuous quality improvement. Australia and the Netherlands have government-wide adoption programs; the UK's HMRC is using it for tax reporting; the International Accounting ...more »

Stop discriminating against Americans abroad

America has a very large international balance of payments deficit. One of the best ways to encourage exports by American businesses, and encourage imports by those living abroad, is to end the practice of imposing income taxes on individuals’ worldwide income. Section 911 of the US Tax Code penalizes Americans abroad vis-Ă -vis their foreign counterparts by raising the cost of employment and living. Americans abroad frequently ...more »

Internal Revenue Service - Telephone Hold Time Customer Service

The hold time at the Internal Revenue Service call centers is not good and has been a hot topic this past year. Training more employees to assist with peak times on specific notices would be beneficial, but as one who works in a call site I see alternatives. The recorded informational messages could be "NOTICE Specific" to direct callers to seek other sources even though they are already mentioned on notices ...more »

Public relations........

Taking under consideration the mess we are in. I would think our Govt. needs to be held accountable for promisses made, confront those who are corrupt, move to establish a stonger enforcment of laws. Those who would seek to destroy our country should be punished. Secure our boarders and for those who are in our country, that are practicitng war games to over throw our country( 300 at last count).
